| Abstract: |
The goal of my specialist work is to establish the possibilities of encouraging a client's positive self image in a retirement home with the application of the methods involving fine arts activities and their impact on the emotional and social aspect.
My research is based on theoretical knowledge in relation to logotherapy.
Self-expression through fine arts is more accessible to physically impaired clients compared to other forms of Arts Therapies.
Art, fine arts activities, are the methods which help the elderly to »put together the pieces of their shattered lives« and provide the new meaning and purpose, thus contributing to a more complete self image of an individual, too.
In my specialist work I applied the methodology of action research that is empirical and mostly qualitative.
Among methods of information gathering I chose direct observation with full participation, for I fully participate in a group and inform clients with my research intentions.
Five female home residents (aged 73 up to 78), are included in the research. They were physically impaired after the stroke.
The group part includes components of group dynamics: contacts among group members, mutual help, relationship development with other participants, verbalization of emotions, expression of wishes, exchange of past experiences, following instructions, giving recommendations.
My work is based on the knowledge that professional work in an institution for the elderly requires modern programmes which include methods of help by means of art- art therapy. I expect this work to be contributing to this notion. The presented course of my research work aims at proving positive effects on self image of clients in a retirement home and at confirming the very essence of human existence: a need of everybody- regardless of age, education or capabilities, talents- to ascertain her/himself as a unique creative being communicating with other society members. |
