Abstract: This Master's Thesis discusses the effects of expressive-creative movement as a therapeutic medium within movement-expressive therapy (MET) in the treatment of drug dependency. Clinical practice has shown that during the treatment patients with drug dependency change their attitude towards themselves as a bio-psycho-social unit. The theoretical part of the thesis addresses the issues of attitude towards one's body, self-image in adolescents, movement-kinaesthetic and emotional intelligence, expression with creative movement and movement-expressive therapy as one of the therapeutic methods in the treatment of dependency. In the empirical part, patients with drug dependency reported on their attitude towards their bodies at the beginning and at the end of a 6-week detoxification and intensive treatment that included MET. Sixty patients with drug dependency were included in the experimental and control groups. The attitude towards the body was assessed with a questionnaire that addressed five issues: experiencing one's body, attitude towards dance, body – health - wellbeing, attitude towards sports and exercise, and taking care of one's body. The results showed no statistically significant difference in the overall attitude between the experimental and control groups. The main weakness of the experimental design was the short period of time between the assessments. However, the results for the individual issues did suggest the importance of the attitude towards sports, dance and expressive movement in relation to the treatment of patients with drug dependency, and to the relationship of these issues with their psycho-physical wellbeing. This research is a contribution to the development of movement-expressive therapy as one of the methods of group creative psychotherapy, and it establishes the foundation for further study of its effects.
