| Abstract: | My work was an investigation of a treatment model using group art therapy with a person suffering from psychotic mental disorder. The theoretical part introduced the principles of treatment using art and art therapy. The method used in this study was group art therapy, and therefore group dynamics and influence of a group upon an individual were depicted. Furthermore, the purpose and aims of art therapy in the treatment of mental disorders were presented, focusing on the use of art therapy with hospitalized patients with psychotic disorders. In the research the case study method was used to examine how creative artistic expression and process in group art therapy support the medical treatment of a patient with a psychotic mental disorder. On the basis of treatment goals set for the patient, an art therapy program was constructed and the concepts and techniques of work were chosen, which were adjusted as necessary during the process of treatment.Through creative artistic expression and verbalization of art contents, the patient gained understanding and assumed an active role in the treatment of her psychotic disorder. The methods of creative art therapy led to improved self-assertion, self-awareness and personal integrity of the patient as well as of other participants in the group art therapy. The patient also mentioned that through her creative artistic expression she successfully established positive contacts within the group. It was also shown that the group, the artistic expression in the group and the help of an art therapist established a safe and therapeutic place for the person with psychotic disorder.Important correlations were also found between changes in the artistic expression of the person with psychotic disorder and her mental health during the period of art therapy treatments. |
