A work model for group therapy

Cervantes’ immortal work discusses the encounter between the internal and external, and between subjective and objective reality. The poster describes a workshop which utilizes the creative process as a platform for investigating this encounter. The blades of Cervantes’ windmills become the wings of the participants’ imagination, taking them on a journey through three levels: the intrapersonal, interpersonal and group level. The poster describes how, over the course of the workshop, the participants will use the art materials to reveal what is hidden within, what is transported and translated out, and how we can use the common versus the personal to understand concerning issues . The suggested workshop deals with issues of selection, prioritization and possible rejection. Moreover, trust, which is a main factor in every group (e.g. Gladding, 1991), is physically practiced in this work model, for your art works are placed in the hands and used by another member.

Stage I: Intrapersonal process:

Each participant creates three intuitive art works from a variety of materials available, over a short, limited period of time, then chooses one of the art works and continues to develop it, again, over a short, limited time. This interpersonal act of choosing one over the other, encounter the participant with an indicative process of choice making and selection- What do I emphasize and what do I put aside.

Stage II: Interpersonal process:

Each participant chooses from the art works of the other participants one piece (that was not developed) and continues the art work itself, develops it with his own intuitive contents. This stage enables the participant to bridge his inner truth and mater with internal truth of another and to use the external to better understand the internal. It also allows dealing with a possible rejection, in the case that none of your art works were chosen.    This stage is innovative and sensitive, it puts your inner world exposed and vulnerable not only in the minds of the others, as do all group therapy, but in the most concrete way, in the hands of another. Your degree of trust is being emphasized, as do dealing with any emotions that may rise by the changes made to your work by another. 

Each participant joins another group member for joint reflection on the selection and creative process.

Stage III: Group process:

Sharing in a joint experiential circle, after which, the co-therapists will mark out the ‘collective living space’. One by one, the participants place all the pieces within it, in a spontaneous manner without any forethought, resulting in an interwoven human tapestry, which both includes and makes room for all the items composing it.

Each participant is allowed to make changes to the positioning of the items within the shared space, until the natural end of the process.  At the end, in a spontaneous manner without any forethought, each participant says one word.

כנפי טחנות הרוח בספרו של סרוונטס, יהפכו לכנפי הדמיון של משתתפי הסדנה, וייקחו אותנו למסע העובר דרך שלושה רבדים: תוך-אישי, בין-אישי וקבוצתי.

במהלך הסדנה, המשתתפים יקשיבו לחומר של האמנות הפלסטית, ויחשפו את הגלום בתוכו.

בסיום התהליך, המשתתפים ימקמו בתוך "מרחב מחייה" משותף את התוצרים האמנותיים.

שלב א': תהליך תוך-אישי:

כל משתתף יצור שלוש יצירות אינטואיטיביות בזמן קצר וקצוב. יבחר אחת מתוכן, וימשיך לפתח אותה.

שלב ב': תהליך בין-אישי:

כל משתתף ייבחר יצירה נוספת, מהיצירות שנוצרו על-ידי האחרים ולא נבחרו, וימשיך לפתח את מרחב המחייה שלה.

כל משתתף יחבור למשתתף אחר (בחירה סוציומטרית אינטואיטיבית), לרפלקציה בשניים על תהליך הבחירה והיצירה.

שלב ג': תהליך קבוצתי:

Sharing במעגל חוויתי משותף.

לאחריו, המנחות יסמנו במרכז את "מרחב המחייה הקולקטיבי".

המשתתפים, אחד-אחד, ימקמו בתוכו את מכלול העבודות, באופן ספונטני וללא תכנון מראש.

תיווצר רקמה אנושית משורגת, המכלילה את הפרטים המרכיבים אותה, ונותנת מקום לכולם.

כל משתתף רשאי יהיה לבצע שינויים בהעמדה בתוך המרחב המשותף, עד לסיום טבעי של התהליך.

בסיום, כל משתתף, באופן ספונטני וללא תכנון מראש, יאמר מילה. אחת.

 

Biography

Einat (Nattie) Doron is an expressive art therapist (MA) with an extensive experience in both children and adult therapy, and has been a supervisor for therapists of different modalities and for students in their training program. Her main interests are cross-cultural art therapy and the single session therapy, her work in Africa has been published and presented in a conference in 2015. Nattie has a private clinic in Binyamina and is working in a home for in-risk children and with the ministry of Defence with widows in their grieving process.

Hagit Sharir is an expressive art therapist (MA) and psychotherapist, involved both in individual and group psychotherapy.  She works as a therapist in a mental health clinic for adults at ‘Meuhedet’ Health Services in Tel-Aviv.  Her work also includes supervision for art therapists and students in addition to supervising psycho-educational teams who integrate adolescents with mental disorders and illnesses in the regular educational system.  Highly experienced in treating both adults and adolescents, Hagit works with the elderly and with Holocaust survivors at the ELAH Center for coping with loss, and owns a private clinic, both in Tel Aviv. She also joined Isra’AID, a humanitarian organization that provides MHPSS (Mental Health Psychosocial Support) in nature disaster areas around the world.

Hagit has raised three children, the eldest of whom has been diagnosed on the ASD spectrum and is active for people with disabilities and vulnerable populations in Israel.
