Course Title: Masters and Postgraduate Diploma in Dance Movement Therapy

Duration:  Three years part-time for the MA

One year for the Postgraduate Diploma

Entry Requirements:

This course is aimed at applicants holding a bachelor’s degree, professionals of psychology, pedagogy and medicine, and other graduates or professionals with experience in dance and/or expressive movement. Other professionals without a university qualification, with previous assessment of their curriculum vitae, can also apply and obtain the Master’s Degree Title.

Other criteria:

•             to be able to read English without many difficulties

•             to undertake a personal psychotherapeutic process during the course

•             to have done a dance movement therapy introductory course

•             an oral and movement interview.

 

Course Philosophy and Main Theoretical Approaches:

The master’s degree offers a comprehensive training in DMT and consists of theoretical and experiential sessions, clinical practice, supervision and research – a total of 100 ECTS.

The course adopts a multidisciplinary focus, building on a psychodynamic and general inter-subjective psychological orientation. It includes professionals and students from nearly twenty different countries, and more than 300 students have completed the course over the last eleven years.

 

Course Content:

Year One (30 ECTS, equal to postgraduate degree)

DMT Basics  (10 ECTS)

  • Dance movement theory: history and theory (2.5 ECTS)
  • Dance movement theory: Child Skills (1.25 ECTS)
  • Dance movement theory: Adult Skills (1.25 ECTS)
  • Experiential anatomy (1.5 ECTS)
  • Embodiment theories (1.5 ECTS)
  • Movement Observation and Analysis: Clinical Applications I (1.5 ECTS)

Experiential classes and auto analysis (10 ECTS)

  • Movement observation and analysis (6 ECTS)
  • Preparation: Dance Movement Theory (4 ECTS) 

Theoretical underpinnings of DMT (10 ECTS)

  • Psychotherapy: Introduction to Theory and Practice (2.25 ECTS)
  • Psychology: Developmental Perspectives (3 ECTS)
  • Group Psychology: Group Dynamics (2.25 ECTS)
  • Psychopathology (2.5 ECTS)

Year Two (40 ECTS)

Advanced experiential classes and auto analysis (10 ECTS)

  • Movement Observation and Analysis: Clinical Applications (1.5 ECTS)

  • Embodiment Theories  (1.25 ECTS)

  • Theory & Practice of Creative Arts Therapies (2.25 ECTS)

Research (10 ECTS)*

  • Case Study (4 ECTS)
  • Research and dissertation: comparative methodology in the different psychotherapies (6 ECTS)

Supervised clinical practice (20 ECTS)

  • Clinical Placement as assistant and therapist in training (15 ECTS)
  • Group supervision (5 ECTS)

* The Research Module extends normally over year two and three: taught classes take place during the  second year of the course, individual tutorials, methodology and writing up of the research takes place during the year three.

 

Qualification Awarded: MA in Dance Movement Therapy

Language: All modules are taught in Spanish
