Professional Context of Art Therapy

At present the Art Therapy Department in the Crawford College of Art and Design is in the process of seeking validation for an MA in Art Therapy.

The department expects to deliver an MA in Art Therapy both on a full time and part time basis beginning in 2005.

The Art Therapy Department has been running a Part time Post-Graduate training in Art therapy since 1998.

This Training was established through a franchise agreement with the University of Hertfordshire in the UK.

Crawford College of Art and Design is the only recognised training in Art Therapy in Southern Ireland.

Qualified practitioners register with the Irish Association of Creative Arts Therapies (IACAT) which was established in the 1980’s.

Along with the MA in Art Therapy the department deliver a number of short courses which for many is their first introduction to art therapy.

Duration of Studies

Full time - 2 years
Part time - 3 years

Course Content

The course is based around three components of learning:
Experiential and studio practice - workshop and personal art practice
Theoretical studies -art therapy theory and related theoretical / research modules
Professional practice - 120 days on a clinical placement
It is a mandatory requirement that students undertake personal therapy for the duration of the training.

Course Philosophy

The course philosophy is based on three constructs of learning – theoretical, experiential and clinical, which form a central core of learning defined as ‘professional practice’ worked from a belief in the creative potential of the art medium. These three areas embody key features of knowledge, skills in professional practice and self-awareness.
Central to all of the learning is the Self, that is the students or individuals willingness and ability to use their own psychological life as a tool to engage and work with the psychological lives of others.
In this respect the course positions its self firmly with the importance of the creativity of the trainee and its development within a psychotherapeutic context. The course aims to provide a learning experience, which is both challenging and supportive to the student.
